RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky University men's basketball head coach A.W. Hamilton will serve as the grand marshal of the inaugural NEON Night Run/Walk, A Paint the Town Pink Event, on Oct. 4 in Richmond.

Paint the Town Pink started in 2009 as a community campaign to increase cancer awareness, prevention and treatment throughout Madison County. Through the generosity expressed to the campaign, more than $150,000 has been donated to support local initiatives that align with the campaign's mission since its inception.

The NEON Night Run/Walk is a partnership between Baptist Health Richmond, the City of Richmond and EKU.

"I'm honored to be a part of the very first NEON Run/Walk event and to have this opportunity to help increase cancer awareness," Hamilton said.  "Cancer has impacted my life, and the lives of my family and friends.  As a basketball coach, I've seen firsthand what a team of individuals can accomplish by working together.  If we all work together WE WILL beat cancer."

Community members and race participants are also invited to enjoy a block party in the Mill District throughout the Water Street area from 7-10 p.m.  Downtown businesses will open their doors to feature delicious food, live music and activities for all ages.

The race will start at 8 p.m. on Water Street at the 2nd and Water Street intersection, close to Apollo Pizza & Beer Emporium, the presenting sponsor of the race.

Participants will run or walk through downtown Richmond, including parts of the EKU campus, under the evening sky, adorned in neon colors to light up the night.  Awards will be given for the top-3 overall male and female finishers.  There is a $35 fee for participation in the NEON Night Run/Walk.

All race participants will receive a neon race shirt, head lamp, and multi-colored wristband to ensure safety.

"I invite everyone to join us on Oct. 4," said Hamilton.  "We will have a great time and together we will move one step closer to winning the battle against cancer."
