Colonels Reign Over North Alabama in First Game Back Home

Freihofer Drops 20-Point, 12-Rebound Double Double

RICHMOND, Ky. – Behind a 20-point, 12-rebound double double by freshman guard Liz Freihofer, the Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team rolls to a 94-58 victory over North Alabama on Saturday afternoon at the newly renovated Baptist Health Arena.

EKU (12-5, 2-2 ASUN) claims its first victory inside Baptist Health Arena since Feb. 24, 2024 and move to 5-1 on the season in home contests.  The Colonels are 38-12 (.760) at home under fourth-year head coach Greg Todd.

Freihofer led the Colonels in Saturday's win with 20 points and 12 rebounds.  The Union, Kentucky native shot 8-for-14 from the floor and 4-of-9 from deep to drop the first double double of her young career.

EKU upperclassmen Raphaela Toussaint, Kaitlyn Costner, and Ambah Kowcun added 13 points apiece in the win while forward Jasmine McGinnis-Taylor had 10 points and four rebounds – her seventh consecutive game ending in double figures.

Senior guard Alice Recanati was on triple double watch ending with eight points, six rebounds, and a season-high 11 assists.  With Saturday's assist total, EKU's program leader in assists moves to 619 career assists since 2020.

EKU made 38-of-68 field goals to total its second-best field goal percentage (56 percent) of the season.  The Colonels had season-high values with 29 assists and 13 made three pointers in the win.  EKU's 94 points on Saturday was the program's third largest point total over an Atlantic Sun Conference opponent since joining the league in 2021.

The Colonels opened Saturday's game going 11-for-11 from the floor and never relinquished its offensive barrage over the Lions.  EKU won the first quarter over North Alabama by a wide 31-17 mark behind eight points from Costner off two made threes.

In the second quarter, EKU pushed its lead to 20 off a made three from Freihofer with 4:42 left in the half.  The Colonels scored on six of their next eight possessions behind two threes by Kowcun and layups by Kailani Lindsey to take a 30-point, 57-27, lead into the locker room.

Out of the break, EKU continued its effort from the field with five made three pointers in the third period, including two made threes by Althea Kara Angeles and Freihofer to near a 40-point lead at the end of the quarter, 76-37.

Within two minutes of the fourth quarter, EKU had reached 80 total points off two scoring drives from Toussaint.  The Colonels would never look back extending its lead to over 40 points three times in the frame to claim a 94-58 win over North Alabama for the fourth-straight time.

North Alabama (7-8, 2-2 ASUN) ended Saturday's game shooting under 33 percent from the floor and only connected on 8-of-22 three-point attempts. Sarang West led the Lions with 11 points and was only one of two UNA players in double figures.

EKU continues its three-game home stand on Jan. 16 against long-time rival Austin Peay back inside Baptist Health Arena.  The game is scheduled to tipoff at 7 p.m. ET, fans can purchase tickets online here.
