Women’s Basketball Hosts Austin Peay, Bellarmine This Week

EKU, Austin Peay, Bellarmine Bunched in ASUN Standings

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team continues a three-game home stand in the newly renovated Baptist Health Arena this week against Austin Peay on Thursday and Bellarmine on Saturday.  All three teams enter the week bunched up in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings.
 
Thursday's game against Austin Peay is slated to tipoff at 7 p.m. ET and will be Beanies & Bargains Night at the arena.  Saturday's game against Bellarmine will go at 4 p.m. ET, the EKU athletics department will honor hall of fame former coach Larry Inman and the NCAA Tournament, Ohio Valley Conference Champion 2004-05 squad at halftime.
 
Fans wishing to see the Colonels in action can purchase tickets online here.  Those not able to be in attendance can find both games streamed live on ESPN+ and heard live on 92.5 WEKY.  Saturday's game will also air live on area cable systems on WBON-TV, providing coverage from Richmond to West Virginia.
 
EKU (12-5, 2-2 ASUN) enters the week tied for sixth in the ASUN women's basketball standings and is coming off a 94-58 win over North Alabama last weekend in Richmond.  Freshman guard Liz Freihofer had a 20-point, 12-rebound double double leading the Colonels in their effort, she was named the ASUN Freshman of the Week following her performance for the fifth time this season.
 
Continuing the crucial home stretch, EKU's all-time leader in assists, Alice Recanati, is first in the ASUN Conference and top 55 nationally in assists (82) and assists per game (4.8).  She dropped a career-high 11 in the win over UNA to push her career total to 619 since joining the program in 2020.
 
As of Wednesday, EKU is first in the ASUN Conference and top 65 nationally in defensive rebounds per game (28.8), assists per game (16.3), and assist to turnover ratio (1.06).  The Colonels have grabbed 40 or more rebounds in five of their last eight games and had 29 assists in the win over UNA – the most since the November of last season.
 
Scouting Austin Peay
Despite starting the conference slate with a 72-58 loss to the Colonels, Austin Peay (8-7, 3-1 ASUN) has won its last three games over North Florida, North Alabama, and Bellarmine – averaging 68.0 points per game in the stretch.  Freshman forward Sa'Mya Wyatt continues to lead the Govs with 12.6 PPG and has scored double figures in 12 of her last 13 games.
 
History vs. Austin Peay
Thursday's game in Richmond is the 92nd all-time meeting between EKU and APSU dating back to 1974. The Colonels lead the head-to-head series 50-41 and are 27-13 against the Govs in Richmond.
 
Scouting Bellarmine
Bellarmine (11-6, 2-2 ASUN) will travel to face the ASUN's newest member, West Georgia, on Thursday before making the trip to Richmond on Saturday.  The Knights are having their best season as a member of the conference with a 9-4 non-conference record and have wins in conference play over Central Arkansas and Queens. 
 
Graduate guard Hayley Harrison, a native of Winchester, Kentucky, leads BU with 15.4 points per game and is a two-time ASUN Player of the Week this season.  Down low, 6-foot-1 forward Skylar Treadwell leads the Knights with 7.6 rebounds per outing, which is fifth in the league.
 
History vs. Bellarmine
Saturday's game marks the 14th meeting between EKU and Bellarmine dating back to 1975.  The Colonels are 10-3 over the Knights, including a 5-1 record since the two teams joined the league during the 2021-22 season.
