EKU Track & Field Gets Back in Action at Bellarmine Open

RICHMOND, Ky. - Following the holiday break, the Eastern Kentucky track & field teams are ready to get back into gear as they make their second trip to Louisville, KY to compete in the Bellarmine Open.

The one-day meet will take place at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center with 12 different schools in attendance from across the region, including Louisville, Western Kentucky and others.

Last time out, at the Commonwealth Classic, the Colonels turned in historic performances. Matthew See shattered the school record in the men's weight throw by over two feet, tossing a distance of 56'-1.75" (17.11m) on his third attempt en route to a gold medal in the event. It was See's first ever appearance for the Colonels in the weight throw at an official meet.

Lariah Wooden also made a statement in her debut in the Maroon & White, recording a throw of 45'-4.25" (13.82m) in the women's shot put, coming in at second-best all-time on the Colonel leaderboards. The result earned Wooden her first silver medal of her collegiate career.

Meanwhile, at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener, Justine Kipkoech showed he can turn in just as impressive of times on the track as he can on the cross country course. In a meet featuring many of the best distance runners in the country, Kipkoech finished 15th-place in his indoor debut in the men's 3000m with a time of 7:51.23, also taking the second-place spot on the Colonel all-time board.

The proceedings in Louisville kick off on the track with the men's 60m hurdles prelims and on the field with the women's weight throw both at 10 a.m.
