RICHMOND, Ky. – On a chilly day in the Bluegrass State, the Eastern Kentucky University women's soccer team clinched the No. 2 seed in the 2025 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament with a 1-0 win over top-seeded Lipscomb on Saturday afternoon at the EKU Soccer Field.
With the victory, EKU (10-3-5, 5-2-3 ASUN) secured the No. 2 seed in the ASUN Gold Division and will travel to Fort Myers, Florida, to face North Florida, the No. 3 seed from the ASUN Graphite Division, on Thursday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m. ET.
EKU has now qualified for the ASUN Tournament in every season, 2021-25, its been a member of the league. With five straight years making the league playoffs, the Colonels have tied a program record set by the 2008-12 squads.
Freshman forward
Rachel Phifer scored the match's lone goal in the 51st minute, finishing a sequence of two quick one-touch passes from
Maddy Murphy and
Ella Grode.
Fellow freshman goalkeeper
Jordan LeVasseur recorded her fourth career game, and fourth this season, with double-digit saves, totaling 12 on 24 shots faced. The performance was the second highest save total of her career and moved her to sixth in EKU single-season history with 103 saves.
The Colonels and Bisons played a physical opening half, with Lipscomb taking 12 shots while EKU was held without an attempt. After halftime, the Colonels shifted the momentum, firing 11 shots, five on goal, and finding the eventual game-winner.
Phifer and Grode each tested the keeper early in the second half before Phifer capitalized on a run in the 51st minute.
Senior defender
Kaitlyn Rowlett nearly doubled the lead with a strike from outside the box, and sophomore midfielder
Avery May added another chance in the 69th minute.
In the 79th minute, Murphy hit the crossbar and junior midfielder
Chiara Premoli sent the rebound just wide. EKU's defense, anchored by LeVasseur, held strong over the final 10 minutes to preserve the shutout.
EKU is set to travel early next week to prep for the ASUN Tournament in the Sunshine State. The Colonels will face No. 3 seed North Florida on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET. Tickets, streaming options, and much more will be revealed in the coming days.
