MOREHEAD, Ky. – The renewal of the men's basketball rivalry between Eastern Kentucky University and Morehead State will come in the form of an exhibition contest on Monday in Morehead.
Â
The game at Johnson Arena will begin at 6:30 p.m. ET.
Â
The two teams have played 196 times during the regular season, dating back to the 1930-31 season. However, the Colonels and Eagles have not met since EKU moved to the Atlantic Sun Conference following the 2020-21 season. The Colonels hold a 112-84 advantage in the all-time series.Â
Â
The most recent match-up was in the semifinals of the 2021 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament in Evansville, Indiana. The two programs last played in Morehead on Dec. 14, 2020.
Â
EKU returns two starters from last year's team that finished 18-14 and welcomes 10 newcomers. Senior guard
Turner Buttry and graduate student
Montavious Myrick are the returning starters.
Â
The list of newcomers includes
Jalen Cooper, the 2023 Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Year;
Juan Cranford Jr., the 2025 Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year; and
Amarr Knox, a 2024-25 All-Southwestern Athletic Conference First Team selection.
Â
Morehead State finished the 2024-25 season with a 15-17 overall record and a 10-10 mark in the Ohio Valley Conference. Only two players who played in any games last season return for second-year head coach Jonathan Mattox. Senior Anouar Mellouk started 22 times and averaged 6.7 points and 4.1 rebounds. Senior George Marshall contributed 7.3 points and 3.2 rebounds per game.Â
Â
Mattox's list of incoming transfers includes Tyonne Farrell (Rhode Island), Kameren Wright (South Florida), Jacob Wilson (Louisiana-Monroe), Josiah LeGree (Indiana State) and Tamaury Releford (West Georgia). Releford played against EKU last season and finished with four points and two rebounds in 15 minutes of play off the bench.
Â
After renovation of the seating bowl, the Colonels will play their first game of the season in Baptist Health Arena against in-state rival Western Kentucky on Nov. 10. EKU will begin the 2025-26 regular season against Midway University on Nov. 6. That game will be played at the Seabury Center on the campus of Berea College at 8 p.m.
