Women’s Basketball Overcomes Adversity in Win at Morehead State

Senior Joseana Vaz Records 18-Point, 11-Rebound Double-Double

MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team overcame adversity on the road Wednesday afternoon, earning its seventh straight win over longtime rival Morehead State, 73–60, at Johnson Arena.

Senior forward Joseana Vaz powered the Colonels with her second double-double of the season, finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

The ASUN Newcomer of the Week shot 8-of-13 from the field and knocked down two 3-pointers. Ten of her 11 rebounds came on the defensive end.

EKU (6–1) extended its winning streak to five games and continued its strong defensive start to the season.

The Colonels, who entered the day with the ASUN's top-rated defense, held their fifth opponent to 60 points or fewer and are allowing only 55.8 points per game. The mark is also good enough for top 65 in the NCAA.

Three other Colonels scored in double figures in the 104th meeting between the old foes.

Sophomore guard Liz Freihofer, the reigning ASUN Player of the Week, added 16 points, going 10-of-11 at the free-throw line. Seniors Ella Bradley and Althea Kara Angeles contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The opening quarter featured a back-and-forth stretch before EKU separated with back-to-back 3-pointers from Ndidiamaka Ndukwe and Angeles to take a 17–12 lead. Vaz scored off a turnover in the final seconds to close the quarter ahead, 19–12.

Both teams tightened defensively in the second quarter, combining for just one field goal in the first 3:30 of the frame. Freihofer was fouled on a 3-point attempt and converted all three free throws, pushing the lead to 11. The Colonels led by as many as 13 and took a 36–26 advantage into halftime.

Vaz opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer that sparked a 6–0 run. EKU controlled the period, never allowing Morehead State (2–4) to get closer than 10 points and carried a 58–41 lead into the fourth.

The Eagles cut the margin to single digits twice in the final quarter, but EKU responded each time, either from the field or at the free-throw line, to maintain control and secure the 73–60 victory.

EKU shot 38 percent (18-of-48) and hit nine 3-pointers. The Colonels also capitalized at the line, making 28-of-31 attempts, their most in a game since last season's home conference win over Stetson.

EKU now takes a brief break for Thanksgiving. The Colonels return to action Saturday afternoon, hosting Army West Point at Baptist Health Arena. Tickets are available online here or at the door for $5.
