JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Fifth year guard
Althea Kara Angeles dropped 17 points behind three made threes as the Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team faces adversity on the road defeating North Florida, 71-58, on Thursday night inside UNF Arena.
With the win, EKU (19-9, 9-6 ASUN) continues its winning ways and will enter the weekend winners in six of their last seven games. As of Thursday night, with the top five teams in the Atlantic Sun Conference winning, EKU remains tied with Stetson for fourth place in the standings, however, hold the tiebreak over the Hatters with its No. 170 NCAA NET ranking.
The Colonels also secured back-to-back seasons winning 10 road games for the first time in program history. EKU's 10 wins this season on the road ties the most in program history.
Angeles led all scorers with 17 points in the win. The Melbourne, Australia native shot 50 percent from the floor and knocked down three long shots.
Fellow fifth-year
Jasmine McGinnis-Taylor recorded the 12th double double of her career, seventh this season, with 12 points and 10 rebounds against the Ospreys. Thursday's double figure performance marks six of her last games with 10 or more points.
Senior guard
Kaitlyn Costner added 11 points to the Colonels' final tally going 5-for-9 from the floor. It was her 21st time this season ending in double figure points.
As a team, EKU shot 48 percent (29-of-60) from the floor and hit eight three-pointers. The Colonels outrebounded North Florida by 10 board, 39-29.
North Florida (4-24, 0-15) had two players in double figure scoring, however, could not muster up enough offense to lose its 16th consecutive game and remain winless in ASUN Conference play. The Ospreys matched EKU with eight three pointers and shot 38 percent (23-for-60) from the floor. UNF's eight threes were its third most in conference play while its 38 percent shooting effort was the fifth best versus ASUN foes.
EKU shot the ball poorly in the first quarter allowing North Florida to go on a 12-7 run nearing the media timeout. However, the Colonels ended the frame on a positive run off threes from Angeles and
Alice Recanati to reclaim a 17-15 lead after 10 minutes of play.
In the second quarter, Angeles hit multiple threes and scored 10 of EKU's 20 points in the frame. Freshman guard
Mya Wardle also knocked down a three to give the Colonels a 37-33 advantage heading into the locker room.
Despite the valiant effort from UNF which resulted in 11 lead changes and five ties, EKU was too much for the Ospreys winning the last two quarters 23-19 and 11-6, respectively. EKU made 15 field goals and shot 56 percent in the second half to win Thursday's match, 71-58, over North Florida
