Elijah Underhill Gives EKU Win In Series Finale With 10th Inning Walkoff Home Run

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Elijah Underhill, the 2023 Kentucky Mr. Baseball, hit a home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Eastern Kentucky University a 6-5 victory over North Alabama in the series finale on Sunday at Earle Combs Stadium.
 
With the game tied 5-5 and two outs in the inning, Underhill sent the first pitch he saw sailing over the left field wall to walk it off.
 
EKU (4-20, 3-3 ASUN) trailed 5-4 going into the bottom of the eighth.  With one out and a runner on third, Colby Ott tied the game with a single up the middle.
 
The Colonels jumped out in front for the first time in the series when Silas Shaffer drove in a run with a single to right in the first inning.  AJ Groeneveld made it a 2-0 game with a double to right center in the second.
 
North Alabama (7-14, 4-2 ASUN) cut the deficit in half on Petey Craska's run scoring single up the middle in the third.  The Lions took the lead in the fifth when two runs scored on an error.
 
Trailing 3-2, the Colonels loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the sixth.  A ground out off the bat of Julius Scearce drove in the tying run.  After a walk, Jackson Ginther's sacrifice fly to center platted the go-ahead run.
 
The Lions scored two runs with two outs in the top of the eighth to retake the lead.  Bryant Loving started the rally with a single through the left side.  Leighton Jenkins tied it up with a run scoring single to right center.  Ryker Billingsley put the visitors ahead, 5-4, with a single to left center that scored Jenkins.
 
Groeneveld went 2-for-4 with a walk, a run and an RBI.  Shaffer was 2-for-4 with a walk, a run and an RBI.  Ott had a 2-for-4 game with a run and an RBI.  Underhill's only hit in four at bats was the game-winner.
 
Billingsley finished 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI for North Alabama.
 
EKU starter Carson van Haaren allowed just one earned run on five hits in 4 1/3 innings.  The freshman tied his career-best with seven strikeouts.  North Alabama starter Anthony Pingeton gave up two runs on four hits, walked three and struck out five in five innings of work.
 
The Colonels will play at No. 22 Vanderbilt on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET.
