RALEIGH, N.C. - The Eastern Kentucky University track & field teams had a weekend to remember as they recorded a number of historic performances at the Raleigh Relays.
Over the three days of competition, the Colonels broke three different program records, as well multiple others putting their names within the top five on the all-time boards for the program.
DAY ONE
Jan Badia-Celma got the ball rolling from the jump for the squad, posting a new personal best in the men's 1500m with a time of 3:41.78. The time places second-best all-time for the Colonels, a place that was held by Badia's previous personal best of 3:41.89 and sits just 0.53 seconds behind the current record. Badia and
Aniol Borras both finished top 35 in the event in a field of over 200 runners.
Things only sped up from there as
Kristian Imroth put the entire NCAA on notice in the men's 3000m steeplechase. The England native cruised to a gold medal in the event, posting a personal best time of 8:33.56 - the fastest time this season in the entire NCAA by over four seconds. It also ranks as the fifth-fastest time in program history.
Justine Kipkoech posted another top five all-time result in the men's 5000m, the team's third of the day. The Indoor ASUN Freshman of the Year clocked a PB time of 13:33.87 in the event to finish in sixth place in another field of more than 200.
DAY TWO
The good times kept rolling for the Colonels as
Bahiya El Arfaoui got the day started on a historic note. El Arfaoui put her name on top of the EKU record books for the second time, setting a new record in the women's 1500m with a time of 4:11.95 for a fourth-place finish. The time broke the previous record by almost five seconds, previously standing at 4:16.84 - a mark that stood since 1986.
Another top-notch performance came on the women's side of the 3000m steeplechase with
Karin Gosek. Gosek finished 12th place with a time of 10:17.19, a new personal best and yet another top-five all-time result for the Colonels at third-best.
A day that opened historically closed historically, as Edna Chelulei delivered another fourth-place finish for EKU in the women's 10,000m, shattering the school record in the progress. Chelulei recorded a time of 32:22.80, besting the previous record of 33:55.24 by a blistering minute and a half.
DAY THREE
The Colonels closed out the Raleigh Relays just as strong as they opened them.Â
El Arfaoui was not content with just two records to her name, tallying a third active record in the women's 800m. The sophomore brought home a bronze medal in the event with a time of 2:04.51, beating out the previous record by just 0.24 seconds. El Arfaoui now holds the record for the 800m in both the outdoor and indoor categories of the EKU record book, breaking the indoor mark with a 2:07.68 at the Lenny Lyles Invitational earlier this year.
Borras gave the Colonels a fitting end to their historic weekend, turning in one last top-five all-time performance in the men's 800m, also bringing home the bronze medal. Borras clocked a time of 1:48.23 to put himself as fourth-fast in program history in the event.
In total, eight new times were added to the top-five list on the all-time boards for the Colonels in various events, with three of them being new records. Overall, the Colonels finished the meet with three medals in one of the largest meets in the country - two bronze and one gold. The team has now set eight new records in total this season across the indoor and outdoor schedules.
UP NEXT
The Colonels stay a little closer to home as they travel to Louisville, KY for the Jim Vargo Invitational, hosted by ASUN foe Bellarmine. The meet is set for two days, from April 4 through April 5.
