Colonels Suffer Doubleheader Sweep Against Rhode Island

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky University suffered a doubleheader sweep against Rhode Island on Sunday at Earle Combs Stadium.  URI won game one 9-3 before taking the second 8-6.
 
In game one, the Rams scored a pair in the third and two more in the fifth to build a 4-0 lead.  EKU cut into the deficit in the bottom of the eight.  Mauri Bejarano started the inning with a single and then scored on Hayden Duffield's double to left center.  With two outs and two on later in the inning, Colby Ott singled to right to score Duffield.  Jackson Ginther came home on the play as well after a Rhode Island error to make it a 1-run contest, 4-3.
 
URI put the game away with five runs in the ninth, including a 3-run home run from Eric Genther, who finished 3-for-5 with a run and four RBIs.
 
Diego Alan led EKU with three hits in four at bats.
 
Rhode Island starting pitcher Trystan Levesque pitched six scoreless innings.  He allowed three hits and walked two while striking out eight.
 
After grabbing a 1-0 lead in the third inning of game two, the Rams added six runs in the fifth inning.  All six scored with two outs in the frame.  DJ Perron had a bases clearing double down the left field line.
 
The Colonels got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Nazir Mendez hit a 3-run home run over the wall in right center.  It was his second homer of the season.  A sacrifice fly off the bat of Greg Caban made it a 7-4 game.
 
Julius Scearce got EKU (0-15) within one, 7-6, when he hit a 2-run home run with no outs in the bottom of the seventh.  It was his fourth of the season.
 
Alana had a 3-for-5 game with a double and a run scored.  Mendez finished 1-for-4 with a walk and three RBIs.  Scearce went 1-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.
 
Perron finished 2-for-5 with a run and four RBIs for the Rams (7-8).  URI starter Jake Cullen pitched five scoreless innings.  He allowed one hit, walked two and struck out six.
 
The Colonels will play at Northern Kentucky on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
