JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Edna Chelulei headlined the Atlantic Sun Conference's Outdoor Track & Field Postseason Honors for Eastern Kentucky University, being named the conference's Most Outstanding Women's Freshman Performer as announced by the league office on Wednesday.
Joining Chelulei in All-ASUN recognition were
Irene Rubio Miralles,
Keeton Thornsberry, and
Kristian Imroth, who were selected to the women's and men's ASUN All-Academic Teams, respectively.
A two-time freshman athlete of the week this season, Chelulei takes top newcomer honors after claiming gold in the 5,000m at the ASUN Outdoor Championships in a time of 16:17.73, breaking a 21-year-old ASUN Championship record, breaking the EKU school record in the women's 5,000m at the Wake Forest Invitational with a time of 15:43.67 (19th fastest time in the East Region this outdoor season), and running the 4th fastest time in the 10,000m for the East Region while setting the school record with a time of 32:22.80 at the Raleigh Relays.
On the academic side, for the women,
Irene Rubio Miralles earned her first all-academic selection with a 4.0 GPA in the Master of Business Administration program.
On the track this season, the Barcelona, Spain native took fourth at the ASUN Outdoor Championship in the 800m and ran a personal best time in the event at the Raleigh Relays at 2:08.45.
For the men, Thornsberry achieved an impressive 3.81 GPA while pursuing his Doctorate in Occupational Therapy, while Imroth recorded a 3.7 GPA as a master's student in Exercise & Sport Science.
The two men were leaders of "Steeple U" this outdoor season, with Imroth running the 10
th fastest time in the nation in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 8:30.66, and Thornsberry taking bronze at the ASUN Outdoor Championship.
Chelulei and Imroth will hit the track this week at the NCAA East First Round in Jacksonville, beginning on Wednesday evening on ESPN+.
