Eternal Colonel Matt Morrissey Signs Futures Contract with Ottawa REDBLACKS

OTTAWA – Former Eastern Kentucky University quarterback Matt Morrissey has signed a futures contract for the 2026 season with the Ottawa REDBLACKS of the Canadian Football League (CFL).

The contract allows the REDBLACKS to retain Morrissey's player rights for the 2026 season while not having him on the active roster at the time of signing (the current 2025 season).

The signing comes as Morrissey has spent the last two weeks on the REDBLACKS practice squad.

With the Colonels in 2024, Morrissey led the Colonels to an 8-4 regular season record, including a five-game win streak to close out the regular season, sending EKU back to the FCS Playoffs for the second time in three seasons.

Individually, Morrissey threw for 2,088 yards and 14 touchdowns, going 187-326 through the air over 13 games started.

His best statistical game as a Colonel came against West Georgia (9/14), as Morrissey threw for two touchdowns and 277 yards in a 26-7 win for the Colonels.

In 2026, Morrissey will join fellow Eternal Colonel, Payton Collins, in the CFL, with Collins currently starting for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
