Women’s Soccer Prevails Over Central Arkansas, Manning Scores Game-Winner Second Half

Colonels Move to 2-1 in Atlantic Sun Conference Play

RICHMOND, Ky. – Sophomore forward Ana Manning scored the game-winner in the 57th minute to lift the Eastern Kentucky University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Central Arkansas on Friday afternoon at the EKU Soccer Field.

Despite the low score, the conference home opener featured a combined 47 shots and 20 shots on goal.

EKU (7-2-2, 2-1-0 ASUN) secured its second straight win in Atlantic Sun Conference play, earning six points early in the standings.

Manning, a Loveland, Ohio, native, notched her second goal of the season and the eighth of her career. She put two of her three shots on target, converting in the 57th minute on an assist from freshman midfielder Lily Wolf. The assist marked Wolf's first collegiate point.

Manning, sophomore midfielder Avery May and freshman forward Silvia Shirey paced the Colonels with three shots apiece.

Shirey, making her collegiate debut late in the season due to setbacks, nearly scored in the 56th minute with back-to-back attempts off the bench. The Nashville, Tennessee product logged her shots in just 14 minutes of action.

Central Arkansas (3-6, 0-2 ASUN) controlled much of the first half but was unable to capitalize on its chances, outshooting EKU 19-7, but the teams went into halftime scoreless.

The Colonels came out firing in the second period, taking seven shots in the first seven minutes. Manning broke through following a UCA yellow card and consecutive chances by Shirey. EKU took its lead deep into the physical conference match up.

EKU kept the pressure on, adding five more shots and four corner kicks by the 70th minute. The Colonels held strong down the stretch, fending off late attempts from UCA's Megan Moudy to preserve the 1-0 win.

Both teams combined for nearly 50 shots and 20 shots on goal. The Colonels ended the match with 44 percent of the possession and earned a season-high seven corner kicks.

EKU is back in action on Sunday against North Alabama at 1 p.m. ET. The Colonels will be honoring their four-member senior class pre-game, fans are encouraged to arrive early to partake in Senior Day festivities.
