Colonels Cruise Past Jacksonville, Tie Best Start to Conference Play in Program History

EKU Takes Two-Game Lead in ASUN Standings, Extends Nine-Game Winning Streak

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team rolled to an 82-63 victory over Jacksonville on Thursday night inside Baptist Health Arena, taking a two-game lead in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings.

With the win, EKU improved to 16-4 overall and remains perfect in league play at 7-0. The Colonels' seven-game winning streak to open conference play ties the program record for best start to league action, previously set by the 2001-02 squad.

EKU has now won nine consecutive games dating back to Dec. 17, 2025 and moved to 10-2 in home contests this season. Following results across the ASUN, the Colonels emerged with a two-game cushion atop the conference standings.

Four Colonels scored in double figures in the victory, led by freshman guard Kenleigh Woods, who paced all scorers with 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting to go along with five rebounds and four assists.

Senior guard Ndidiamaka Ndukwe added 15 points, marking her ninth consecutive game in double figures, and knocked down two 3-pointers. Fellow senior guard Althea Kara Angeles matched Ndukwe with 15 points on an efficient 6-for-9 shooting performance in 22 minutes.

Sophomore guard Liz Freihofer rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points, including three made 3-pointers, marking her 36th career game scoring in double figures.

Senior forward Joseana Vaz returned to the lineup after missing the previous two games due to injury. The Cape Verde native finished with seven points and three rebounds in limited action.

As a team, EKU recorded its 10th game of the season scoring 80 or more points, shooting 46 percent (28-for-61) from the field. The Colonels connected on eight 3-pointers, made 18 free throws, scored 34 points in the paint, and received 21 points from the bench. EKU dished out 18 assists on 28 made field goals and held a 50-46 edge on the glass.

Jacksonville (11-7, 3-4 ASUN) was led by reigning ASUN Player of the Week Priscilla Williams, who posted a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

The Dolphins scored first, but EKU responded quickly behind early offense from Woods and Ndukwe. Woods knocked down a pair of baskets during an early surge, while Ndukwe attacked the rim to help the Colonels seize momentum. Freihofer added a late 3-pointer as EKU closed the opening quarter strong to take a 12-point advantage.

EKU broke the game open with a decisive 15-0 run to start the second quarter. Angeles jump-started the stretch with back-to-back jumpers, while Ndukwe converted in transition and at the free-throw line. Woods capped the run with a 3-pointer as the Colonels pushed the lead past 20. EKU controlled the paint and the boards throughout the period and carried a 54-27 lead into halftime, its largest of the night.

Jacksonville opened the second half aggressively with consecutive baskets and later used a 7-0 run to cut into the deficit. Freihofer answered with a timely 3-pointer, and Woods scored in the lane to keep EKU firmly in control. Despite being outscored in the third quarter, the Colonels entered the fourth with a 19-point cushion.

EKU extended the lead back to 25 early in the final period behind baskets from Angeles and Ndukwe. Jacksonville answered with an 8-0 run to trim the margin to 76-59, but Madison Lewis closed out the contest for EKU, scoring six points over the final three minutes to secure the 82-63 victory.

The Colonels return to action Saturday, Jan. 24, hosting North Florida inside Baptist Health Arena. Tipoff has been moved to 11 a.m. ET due to an impending winter weather threat in the region. Tickets are available for $5 online here or at the door.
