RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University women's basketball team continued its historic run on Saturday afternoon, rolling past North Florida, 88-54, inside Baptist Health Arena to remain unbeaten in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
With the win, EKU improved to 17-4 overall and 8-0 in league action, setting a program record for the best start to conference play in school history. The Colonels have now won 10 consecutive games and improved to 11-2 at home this season.
EKU also maintained its position atop the ASUN standings, holding a two-game lead over West Georgia and a three-game cushion over Florida Gulf Coast, who fell to third place with a home loss to Lipscomb today.
Freshman guard
Kenleigh Woods turned in a career performance to lead all scorers with a career-high values with 23 points, seven assists, and six rebounds. The Ashland, Kentucky, native shot 10-of-14 from the field and went 3-of-4 from the free-throw line.
Woods recorded her 11th career game in double figures and has now scored in double digits in three straight contests, including 20 or more points in two of her last three outings.
Four additional Colonels reached double figures. Senior
Althea Kara Angeles followed Woods with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting to go along with five rebounds and five assists.
Senior
Ndidiamaka Ndukwe added 12 points, knocking down three shots from beyond the arc, while sophomore
Liz Freihofer narrowly missed a double-double with 11 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. Senior
Joseana Vaz rounded out the scoring with 10 points and seven rebounds, marking her 13th double-figure performance of the season.
EKU shot an even 50 percent (32-of-64) from the floor and rebounded from the free-throw line, converting 79 percent (19-of-24) of its attempts. The Colonels totaled 25 assists on 32 made field goals, outrebounded the Ospreys 41-34, and forced 18 turnovers.
Despite a quieter shooting night from beyond the arc, EKU dominated inside with 54 points in the paint and scored 25 points off North Florida turnovers.
North Florida fell to 7-12 overall and 2-6 in ASUN play. Jamisyn Stinson led the Ospreys with 17 points, including three of the team's six made 3-pointers.
EKU set the tone early with an 8-0 opening run sparked by baskets from
Ella Bradley, Angeles, and Woods. Vaz completed a three-point play midway through the first quarter, and Ndukwe added a 3-pointer as the Colonels forced multiple turnovers and built a 23-13 lead after one.
The Colonels maintained control in the second quarter behind balanced scoring and steady defensive pressure. Woods attacked the rim for multiple finishes, while Freihofer and Vaz capitalized at the free-throw line to help EKU carry a 38-25 advantage into halftime.
EKU extended the margin coming out of the break, as Vaz and Ndukwe scored early in the third quarter to halt any North Florida momentum. The Colonels controlled the glass and turned defensive stops into efficient offense, scoring 27 points in the period to push the lead heading into the fourth.
The Colonels closed out the victory with another 20-point quarter in the final frame. Freihofer converted timely free throws, Woods finished at the rim off crisp ball movement, and EKU managed possessions down the stretch to secure the 88-54 win.
EKU will begin a three-game road swing next week, opening play at West Georgia on Thursday, Jan. 29. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
