Colonels Score First, But Bears Win Opener

CONWAY, Ark. –
Eastern Kentucky University scored first, but Central Arkansas answered with 10 runs in the bottom of the first on its way to a 12-2 victory in the Atlantic Sun Conference series opener on Friday at Bears Stadium.
 
Dylan Littlefield gave the visitors a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning.
 
The first seven batters who came to the plate in the bottom of the first reached for UCA.  Parker Gwyn gave his team the lead for good with an RBI double to down the right field line.  Two runs scored on an error that made it 6-1.  Jagger Schattle capped the big inning with a 2-run home run for a 10-1 lead.
 
EKU's second run came in the top of the fifth on an RBI double off the bat of David Alvarez
 
Alvarez finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Littlefield was 1-for-2 with an RBI.  Chardy Tierney gave the Colonels (10-28, 4-12 ASUN) three innings of scoreless relief.  He allowed two hits, did not walk a batter and struck out five.
 
Schattle had a 2-for-4 game with two runs and three RBIs for the Bears (20-18, 8-8 ASUN).  Denver Hamilton (6-0) pitched a complete game with no walks and seven strikeouts.
 
Game two of the series on Saturday will begin at 5 p.m. ET and air live on ESPN+.
