Jessen Leads Colonels On Day One Of ASUN Championship

DOTHAN, Ala. –
Sophomore Imogen Jessen led the Eastern Kentucky University women's golf team with an even-par round of 72 on the first day of the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship in Dothan, Alabama on Friday.
 
As a team, the Colonels sit in fifth place, just six shots out of third, with 36 holes remaining.  EKU carded an opening round 298 (+10).
 
"I felt like we left a few shots out there, but they hung in there to finish well," Head Coach Mandy Moore said.  "We are in a good position for tomorrow." 
 
Starting on hole No. 10, Jessen was 2-over after the first four holes.  She birdied the par-4 No. 14 and then shot par on each of the next seven holes.  After a bogey on the par-5 No. 4, the sophomore rebounded to birdie two of the final five and reach the clubhouse at even-par (72).
 
"It was a good start to the tournament, and good momentum for the next two rounds," said Jessen.  "I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings."
 
Jessen is tied with six others for fifth place.  Brianna Castaldi of North Florida is the first round leader at 5-under (67).  UNF's Ava Cottis (-3) and Kaitlyn Schroeder (-2) are second and third.  Christina Surcey of Lipscomb is fourth at 1-under (71).
 
Round two on Saturday will start at 9 a.m. ET.  EKU will be in the first groups to go off and will start on No. 1.  The course at Dothan Country Club has a par of 72 and plays to 6,256 yards.
 
North Florida leads the field of 12 teams after an opening round 10-under 278.  Florida Gulf Coast (289) is second and Lipscomb (292) is third.  Stetson (296) sits two shots in front of EKU.
 
Bellarmine (299) is one shot behind the Colonels in sixth.  Central Arkansas (300) and Austin Peay (300) are tied for seventh.  West Georgia (301) is ninth.  North Alabama (305), Jacksonville (313) and Queens (314) round out the field.
 
Karra Tucker and Claira Ramsey Eden both shot first round scores of 74 (+2) and are tied for 17th.  Both had two birdies in the first round.  Eden birdied the par-3 No. 11 on her second hole of the day.
 
Lanie Campbell (78) is tied for 47th and Mary Keene Marrs (79) is tied for 49th.
