JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Eastern Kentucky University's
Brighter Jepchumba has been named the ASUN Female Track Performer of the Week, while
Hamish Murray earned ASUN Male Freshman of the Week honors, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Jepchumba – a freshman from Uasingishu County, Kenya – broke the EKU record in the outdoor 5,000 meters on Friday night at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, running a time of 15:28.09.
That time is currently the 12
th fastest in the NCAA this season.
Jepchumba won the 5,000 meters at the ASUN Indoor Championships in February.
She has also clocked a time of 32:40.65 in the 10,000 meters this outdoor season. That time is the second fastest in EKU history and the 23
rd fastest in the NCAA this spring.
Murray was named ASUN Freshman of the Week after winning his heat of the men's 1,500 meters at Wake Forest with a personal-best time of 3:46.80.
That time currently ranks 10
th in the ASUN and is the fastest by a freshman in the league so far this season.
Murray – a native of Tauranga, New Zealand – was a member of EKU's gold medal-winning and record-setting DMR team at the ASUN Indoor Championships.
It is the second time this outdoor season that he has been named ASUN Freshman of the Week.
