Colonels Stage Late Comeback To Beat WKU

Box Score (pdf)

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky University scored three runs in the eighth inning to complete a comeback and beat Western Kentucky, 5-3, in Bowling Green.

Trailing 2-0, the Colonels tied the game in the seventh.  With one out and the bases loaded, Pedro Moreno singled to left field, bringing home Jackson Reid and Ricco Longo to tie the game.

EKU (13-36) took the lead in the eighth.  David Alvarez started the inning with a single up the middle and moved to third on Jackson Cauthron's single to center.  A fielder's choice off the bat of Longo plated Alvarez and broke the tie.  A double from Reid put runners on second and third.  Boone Shevey followed with a sacrifice bunt to bring home Longo.  Kobe Benson drove in Reid with an infield single to make it 5-2.

A fielding error allowed a run to score in the bottom of the eighth to get the home team within two.  Western Kentucky got the tying run on base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Griffin Howell got a ground ball to second base to end the game and earn his third save of the season.

The Hilltoppers (26-23) scored twice in the bottom of the first to take an early lead.  Cael Frost drove in the game's first run with a single through the right side.  WKU tacked on another on a double steal attempt for a 2-0 advantage.

Longo went 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.  Moreno finished 1-for-5 with two RBIs.  Alvarez had two hits in five at bats and scored a run.

Nine different pitchers pitched one inning each for the Colonels.  Carson van Haaren earned the win after pitching a scoreless seventh inning.  He did not allow a hit and walked one.

Frost had a 2-for-4 game with an RBI for WKU.

The Colonels will play a 3-game series at Austin Peay starting Friday at 7 p.m. ET.
