Final Results

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Eastern Kentucky University freshman Brighter Jepchumba won the women's championship 6K at the John McNichols Invitational on Saturday, breaking the long-standing LaVern Gibson Championship Course record with a time of 19:14.0.
 
Jepchumba dueled with fellow freshman Katy Zang of Indiana down the homestretch. Zang pulled ahead late, but Jepchumba battled back and overtook her in the final 100 meters to win a dramatic race. Jepchumba's time of 19:14.0 broke the course record, set by former Texas Tech national champion and Olympian  Sally Kipyego.
 
Jepchumba did not compete in cross country last year; however, she was a second-team All-American in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene in June. She ran a personal-best time of 32:40.65 in the 10K last track season.
 
All-American Edna Chelulei (19:42.6) finished fourth out of the 230 competitors in Saturday's race, giving the EKU women two low finishers.
 
Sophomores Morgan Kobylinski (34^th / 20:50.3), Metrine Serem (84^th / 21:36.3), and Ann Kiplagat (138^th / 22:24.4) rounded out EKU's scorers on the day.
 
The EKU women finished eighth out of 28 teams in the race with 248 points. The Colonels defeated the likes of Michigan State, Louisville, Indiana, Georgia and Wisconsin on the day.
 
On the men's side, senior Taha Er Raouy led the way, finishing 21^st out of 269 competitors with an 8K time of 24:07.9.
 
Sophomore Enock Bokaba (47^th / 24:29.0), senior Felix Rivet (72^nd / 24:39.5), sophomore Brett Rushman (75^th / 24:39.8), and senior Aiden Coles (95^th / 24:57.1) rounded out the Colonels' top-five at the meet.
 
EKU defeated nationally-ranked squads such as No. 24 Cal Baptist, No. 20 Georgia, No. 26 Louisville, and No. 23 Air Force.
 
The cross country Colonels return to action on Oct. 3 at the Live in Lou Classic in Louisville.
