EKU Compliance - Parents of Current Student-Athletes

Welcome to another year of Colonel Athletics! As the parent of a student-athlete, your actions can have a significant effect on your son or daughter and on the University. Linked below you will find our "Parent Guide" - a summary of rules and regulations prepared especially for you. The guide includes information on topics such as financial aid, amateurism, agents, and gambling.

The Eastern Kentucky University Athletics Department is committed to operating the athletic program in a manner that is consistent with the letter and spirit of NCAA rules. The University will, at no time, compromise the integrity of this institution when it comes to rules compliance. We provide you this rules guide to help us remain in compliance with NCAA rules. Please take a few moments to look it over and, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact the Compliance Office at 859-622-8541.

Remember to always ASK BEFORE YOU ACT! We are never too busy to answer your questions.

  I. Agents

During your child's collegiate enrollment, he or she might be contacted by a sports agent, financial advisor or "runner" (i.e. someone acting on behalf of a sports agent). These individuals may be seeking to represent your child for the purpose of marketing his or her athletics ability if he or she shows the potential to be a professional athlete. Agents or their representatives may have contacted your child already. This is an attempt to gain an advantage over other individuals who may also seek to represent your child in the future. Often these individuals will not identify themselves as agents, but rather as individuals interested in your child's overall welfare and athletics career. These individuals also may attempt to provide gifts or benefits to you, your child, and your family. Your child's eligibility to compete in intercollegiate athletics will be jeopardized if you or your child agrees (orally or in writing) to be represented by an agent, regardless of whether the agreement becomes effective immediately or after your child's final season of eligibility. Your child's eligibility also will be jeopardized if your child, family or friends accept gifts or benefits of any type from an agent or runner. If any individual contacts you or your child about marketing your child's athletics ability, please be careful. If you have any concerns regarding a sports agent, please contact your child's coach, the Compliance Office, our Director of Athletics or the NCAA national office for assistance.

  II. Financial Aid

A student-athlete will not be eligible to participate if he or she receives financial aid that exceeds the value of the cost of attendance as calculated by the University's financial aid office for students in general. A student-athlete may receive institutional financial aid based on athletics ability and outside financial aid for which athletics participation is a major criterion up to the value of a full grant-in-aid (i.e. tuition and fees, room and board, and required course-related books). In addition, a student-athlete may receive other financial aid unrelated to athletics ability up to the total cost of attendance.

Athletics aid may not be awarded for a period of greater than one year or for a period of less than one year (unless specifically permitted by NCAA rules). This means that it is not permissible to offer a guaranteed four year scholarship. An athletics scholarship may be renewed, increased, reduced or cancelled at the end of the year.

During the period of the award, an athletics scholarship may not be increased, decreased or canceled on the basis of athletics ability, performance, contribution to team success, injury, or any other athletics reason. Institutional athletics aid may be reduced or canceled during the year if the recipient:
• Renders himself or herself ineligible for intercollegiate competition;
• Fraudulently misrepresents any information on an application, letter of intent or financial aid agreement;
• Engages in serious misconduct warranting substantial disciplinary penalty;
• Voluntarily withdraws from a sport at any time for personal reasons.
A determination on the renewal of athletics aid will be made on or before July 1 for the following year. The financial aid office will notify each athletics aid recipient with remaining eligibility of the renewal determination.

If a student-athlete's athletics aid is being reduced or canceled during the year, or reduced or not renewed for the following year, the student-athlete will be afforded a hearing upon request through established procedures outside of the athletics department. The student-athlete will be provided written notification of the opportunity for a hearing, including policies and procedures for conducting the hearing and the deadline by which a hearing must be requested.
