Volleyball Drops First Match Of The Season

RENO, Nev. – Senior Liz Guard (Willoughby, Ohio) had 13 kills and sophomore Brittany Nobilio (Johnsburg, Ill.) had 13 digs but the Colonels dropped their first match of the season to 13th-ranked UCLA on Friday evening at the Sands/SBC Tournament in Reno, Nev. The scores of tonight's match were 30-21, 31-29, 30-19.

The Bruins hit .325 in the opening game of the match, downing 19 kills on 40 attacks with six errors on their way to the nine-point margin. The Colonels (2-1) came right back in the second game leading by as much as six in the early going at 13-7 off a kill from freshman Amanda Wilson (Euclid, Ohio). UCLA (1-0) fought back to take the lead at 29-28 before an attack error leveled the score. A kill from senior Nancy Barba and a Colonel attack error gave the Bruins the second game.

After holding UCLA to a hitting percentage of .182 in game two, the Bruins rallied to hit .429 as a team in the third and final game of the match, recording 20 kills on 35 attempts with just five errors. Sophomore outside hitter Rachell Johnson led the Bruins with 18 kills in the match.

The Colonels are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. as they take on host Nevada, before finishing the tournament with a match against San Diego at 8 p.m. on Sunday.
