Lady Colonels Face Second Ranked Opponent On Monday

STILLWATER, Okla. –
Eastern Kentucky’s women’s basketball team will face its second top-25 opponent of the season on Monday when the Lady Colonels play No. 23 Oklahoma State at 8 p.m. ET, in Stillwater. EKU lost at 12th-ranked Vanderbilt earlier in the season.

In their last game, the Lady Colonels (3-5) allowed Houston Baptist to shoot 57.1 percent in an 81-69 loss on Dec. 13 at McBrayer Arena. Junior Colette Cole scored a career-high 21 points for the Lady Colonels.

Cole made 10 of her 11 shot attempts and added seven rebounds. Freshman Kayla Drake scored 14 points, all in the second half. She also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out five assists while only making one turnover in 27 minutes on the court.

The Huskies shot 28-of-49 from the field for the game. Houston Baptist made 12 of 19 second half shot attempts for 63.2 percent. EKU shot 40.3 percent (27-of-67) for the game.

Cole has scored in double figures in four of EKU’s last five games. In Eastern’s most recent five games, Cole is averaging 13 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game. Drake has done her part to help EKU decrease its turnovers. In her last 60 minutes on the court, Drake has turned the ball over only three times. She has an 11-3 assist-to-turnover ratio during that time.

Oklahoma State will play games tonight and on Saturday at the Desert Draw, hosted by UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev. OSU faces Southern Mississippi tonight and then will face either UNLV or California State-Northridge on Saturday.

The Cowgirls enter the weekend 5-2 overall and riding a two-game winning streak. OSU began the season ranked 14th. The Cowgirls lost to then eighth-ranked Duke in their season opener before winning their next three games.

A road upset at Arkansas-Little Rock snapped Oklahoma State’s winning streak. OSU has scored 84 or more points in four of its first seven games.

Junior Andrea Riley leads the team with an average of 20.4 points per game. She also contributes 4.6 rebounds and a team-best 7.3 assists per game. She is a Naismith Trophy semifinalist, a Wooden Award semifinalist and a Lieberman Award finalist. Last season she earned All-American and Big 12 Player of the Year honors.

As of Dec. 14th, Riley ranks fifth in the nation in assists per game and 11th in scoring.

Three other Cowgirls are averaging in double figures. Tegan Cunningham is scoring 13.4 points and grabbing 4.4 rebounds per game. Shaunte’ Smith is the team’s leading rebounder at 8.6 per contest and is contributing 11.3 points per game. Kristin Hernandez hasn’t started a single game, but is scoring 10.9 points per game off the bench.

As a team, Oklahoma State is averaging 75.1 points per game and holding its opponents to 60.7 per game. OSU has gone to the free throw line 63 more times than its opponents have.
