STILLWATER, Okla. – Eastern Kentucky’s women’s basketball team shot 28.3 percent and turned the ball over 30 times in a 90-35 loss to No. 23 Oklahoma State Monday night in Stillwater, Okla. Freshman point guard
Kayla Drake led the Lady Colonels (3-6) with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Andrea Riley scored a game-high 23, in addition to seven assists and four steals for the Cowgirls (8-2).
EKU went 13-for-46 from the field, including 3-for-17 from behind the three-point arc. OSU shot 48.5 percent for the game and committed only 11 turnovers.
Drake got the Lady Colonels on the board first with a free throw 22 seconds into the game. A 6-0 Cowgirl run, including three points from Shaunte Smith and a three-pointer by Riley, pushed Oklahoma State in front by six, 11-5, with 16:20 to play in the opening half.
A lay-up by
Colette Cole at the 12:47 mark, and a jumper by Drake with 12:03 remaining in the first half, each brought EKU to within four, but OSU answered with another run. A 16-2 run by the Cowgirls turned a 15-11 game into a 31-13 lead for the home team. Smith scored five points during the run, including a lay-up to cap it off.
With the help of a three minute Eastern scoring drought, Oklahoma State stretched the run to 24-5 to go in front by 23, 39-16. Taylor Hardeman’s jumper finished off the run with 3:59 before intermission.
Tegan Cunningham’s lay-up made it a 27-point game, 47-20, with less than two minutes remaining in the first half. Her jumper in the final minute set the halftime score at 49-21.
The Cowgirls shot 55.3 percent in the first half while forcing 15 turnovers and holding the Lady Colonels to 36.4 percent shooting.
Four of Oklahoma State’s first six field goals to start the second half were from three-point range. Hardeman knocked down a pair. Her second trey pushed the lead to 64-23 with 14:46 left in the game. OSU opened the second half with a 20-2 run.
With six minutes left in the game, Drake knocked down a three from the left wing to reach double figures for the eighth time in nine games this season.
The Lady Colonels will return to action on Dec. 30 when they host Bluefield State College at McBrayer Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
