Men's Tennis Picks Up 5-2 Win Over Murray State

Freshman Francisco Fontoura
RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky’s men’s tennis team defeated Murray State, 5-2, today at the Greg Adams Tennis Center. The Racers won the doubles point by winning two of the three doubles matches but Eastern won five of the six singles matches.

EKU (11-10, 2-2 OVC) got a pair of victories from Francisco Fontoura. The freshman beat Mikel Headford at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 2-6 and 10-8. He also teamed with Johannes John for an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.

“It was good to see our team bounce back from a very emotionally draining loss last night,” EKU head coach Rob Oertel said. “It was a spirit breaking loss and they showed a lot of resiliency today.”

Eastern Kentucky’s Lars Gratzki (No.1), Mel Segota (No. 2), Fred Goncalves (No.4) and Vadzim Ivanis (No. 5) earned straight set victories in singles play.

In addition to its doubles point, Murray State (1-9, 1-3 OVC) picked up a point with Chris Horton’s 6-7, 7-6 and 6-3 win at No. 3 singles over John.

The Colonels are right back in action on Monday, March 31, with a home non-conference match against the University of the Cumberlands. Match time is set for 3 p.m.
