Austin Peay Deals Lady Colonels Home Loss

RICHMOND, Ky. –
Eastern Kentucky shot below 30 percent for the second straight game and lost to Austin Peay, 67-51, Tuesday night at McBrayer Arena. The Lady Govs (11-10 7-3, OVC) got a double-double from April Thomas, 16 points and 11 rebounds, and a game-high 18 points from Nicole Jamen.

Kayla Drake led the Lady Colonels (6-13, 3-7) with 19 points. Colette Cole added 13 points and a team-best nine rebounds.

Eastern made only 15 of 53 attempts from the field for 28.3 percent. Austin Peay shot 45.5 percent (25-for-55) and out-rebounded the Lady Colonels by 13.

Four different Lady Govs scored in the opening six and a half minutes as Austin Peay jumped out to a six-point lead. Emily Pollock’s jumper at the 13:25 mark put APSU on top 12-6.

The Lady Colonels cut the deficit to three points on three occasions. Nadia Mossong’s three made it 14-11 with 9:36 remaining in the first half. Cole’s jumper made it 18-15 with 7:28 before intermission. A pair of free throws by Drake with 4:58 showing on the clock brought EKU to within 20-17.

After Drake’s free throws, Austin Peay ended the first half on a 9-3 run and led by nine, 29-20, at halftime. APSU shot 42.9 percent (12-for-28) in the first stanza, while Eastern made 29.2 percent (7-for-24) of its shots.

With a lay-up and a free throw 35 seconds into the second half Austin Peay’s Thomas pushed the visitor’s lead to 10, 32-22. Four straight EKU free throws, two by Drake and two by Cherie White, allowed the Lady Colonels to draw within six, 37-31, but the Lady Govs responded with eight unanswered points to build a 14-point advantage. Jasmine Rayner capped the run with a tip-in and a jumper for a 45-31 lead.

An old-fashioned three-point play by Drake broke the Austin Peay run, but the Lady Govs scored eight more unanswered to make it a 16-3 run and a 19-point lead with 7:30 left in the game. Thomas scored four of the eight points.

The Lady Colonels will return to action on Saturday when they host Tennessee State at McBrayer Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
