RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky’s women’s basketball team will try to snap its five-game losing skid on Saturday when Tennessee State visits McBrayer Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. The Lady Colonels (6-13, 3-7 OVC) are coming off a loss to Austin Peay at home. The Lady Tigers (11-10, 7-3 OVC) saw their four-game winning streak come to an end on Thursday at Morehead State.
On Tuesday, Eastern shot below 30 percent for the second straight game and lost to Austin Peay, 67-51, at McBrayer Arena.
Kayla Drake led the Lady Colonels with 19 points.
Colette Cole added 13 points and a team-best nine rebounds. Eastern made only 15 of 53 attempts from the field for 28.3 percent. Austin Peay shot 45.5 percent and out-rebounded the Lady Colonels by 13.
Eastern Kentucky leads the all-time series with Tennessee State 30-12. The last meeting came on Jan 3, 2009, TSU won 61-52 in Nashville. EKU had won 14 straight in the series before the Lady Tigers won the last three in a row. Eastern is 19-2 against Tennessee State in Richmond.
In the earlier meeting between the two teams, Eastern Kentucky committed 33 turnovers in the loss. The Lady Colonels overcame an eight point deficit to tie the score at 52-52 with four minutes left in the game, but did not score again. Cole recorded a double-double for EKU, finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Drake finished with 13 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Cherie White added nine points and 10 rebounds.
Tiffany Jackson scored a game-high 20 points for TSU. Charisse Hicks made four three-pointers and finished with 15 points. Kendra Appling totaled 14 points and six rebounds.
Tennessee State saw its four-game winning streak snapped on Thursday with a 60-51 loss at Morehead State. The Lady Tigers are 7-2 in their last nine games.
Sophomore forward Jasmine Smith led TSU with a double-double against Morehead State, finishing with 16 points and 12 rebounds. The Lady Tigers shot 32.3 percent from the field and 21.4 percent from behind the arc against the Eagles.
Appling, a senior guard, leads the team with an average of 17.7 points per game. Jackson is close behind with an average of 16 points per game. Smith is the team’s leading rebounder at eight rebounds per game and averages 10.1 points per contest.
