CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Host Austin Peay ran for 263 yards and forced four turnovers on the way to upsetting the No. 20 Eastern Kentucky University football team 24-20 Saturday night at Governors Stadium. With the win, the Governors (3-4, 2-2 OVC) ended a 22-game losing streak to the Colonels (4-3, 4-2 OVC).

APSU running back Terrence Holt ran for a career-high 176 yards and two scores in the win. Holt tallied an 80-yard touchdown run in the first quarter before adding a 12-yard score in the third quarter to give Austin Peay the lead for good.

Governor quarterback Jake Ryan found Adrian Miles behind the Colonel defense for a 45-yard touchdown pass early in the first quarter to put Austin Peay on the board first, 7-0. After EKU missed a 37-yard field goal attempt, the Governors struck again thanks to Holt’s 80-yard run.

The Colonel offense finally came to life in the second quarter, scoring on all three possessions to retake the lead, 20-14. Quarterback #T.J. Pryor#’s 15-yard touchdown run a minute into the quarter cut the deficit to 14-7. The first scoring drive was kept alive thanks to a 43-yard completion to junior Shannon Davis on a 3rd-and-14 play.

Pryor completed all four pass attempts for 60 yards on the ensuing drive before junior Bruce Frieson found the end zone with a one-yard touchdown run to even the score at 14-all. In the final two minutes of the half, Pryor moved EKU 62 yards for another score. Pryor completed two third-down passes before capping the drive with a one-yard touchdown rush to give the Colonels a 20-14 lead at the half. Austin Peay blocked the PAT attempt.

A Holt 41-yard punt return in the third quarter set up Austin Peay’s go-ahead score. Starting with excellent field position at the Eastern Kentucky 22-yard line, the Governors needed three plays to find the end zone. Holt ran in from 12 yards to put APSU ahead, 21-20.

Eastern Kentucky had a chance to regain the lead on its ensuing possession, but the Colonels fumbled at the Governors’ one-yard line.

Austin Peay then added a 27-yard field goal with 2:04 left to extend the lead to 24-20. The Governors capitalized on a Pryor fumble following a sack at the EKU 27-yard line on the previous possession.

The Colonels’ last drive ended with a Pryor pass was tipped and then intercepted by Zac Burkhart at the Austin Peay 41-yard line with 1:19 left.

Next week, Eastern Kentucky returns home to face Southeast Missouri. Game time on Oct. 31 is set for 1 p.m.

NOTES
--Andrew Soucy blocked a 45-yard field goal attempt by Austin Peay in the second quarter. Soucy has now recorded a blocked kick in four straight games.

--Wide receiver Garnett Phelps finished with career highs in receptions (15) and receiving yards (119).

--Jeremy Caldwell had a third-quarter interception called back due to an EKU personal foul penalty.

--Austin Peay’s last victory over Eastern Kentucky occurred on Oct. 1, 1977. The Colonels had won 17 straight over APSU in Clarksville and 22 straight overall.
