AUBURN, Ala. – Eastern Kentucky picked up its first win of the 2009 season today at the Tiger Invitational, beating Missouri-Kansas City 4-1.
Jena Handley’s two-run home run in the third proved to be the winning shot.
Freshman
Larkyn Wood’s first career RBI got the Colonels (1-2) on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Wood followed
Erin Luther’s lead-off single with a double down the left field line. With two outs in the third, junior
Shyenne Hussey singled to left field. Handley followed with a two-run shot over the left field fence for a 3-0 EKU lead.
Eastern added another run on a UMKC error in the fifth. Missouri-Kansas City plated its only run on a double play ball in the top of the seventh.
Six Colonels finished with one hit each. Ashley Whiteside and Kelly Fischer each recorded two hits for Missouri-Kansas City.
Stacye Toups (1-1) went the distance and earned her first win of the season for Eastern. The sophomore scattered six hits, allowed one unearned run and struck out two. Anna Sokolik (0-3) suffered the loss, giving up three runs on four hits in two and two-thirds innings.
The Colonels will close out play at the Tiger Invitational on Sunday against Western Kentucky at 12:30 p.m.
