RICHMOND, Ky. – Junior
Jena Handley went 3-for-3, hit a three-run home run and drove in four runs as Eastern Kentucky beat Kent State, 14-6, in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at Gertrude Hood Field. The Golden Flashes (8-14) earned a 4-2 win over the Colonels (10-14) in the first game.
In the second game, KSU jumped out to a quick lead by scoring three runs in the first inning. Amy Hair and Katie Wheeler each had an RBI. EKU answered in the bottom half of the inning. A passed ball allowed the Colonels to get on the board. Handley’s double to left center cut the deficit to 3-2 and
Shyenne Hussey tied the score with a sacrifice fly.
The Colonels put up another three-spot in the second inning, highlighted by a two-run single by
Cassi Gibson. Handley’s three-run shot over the left field fence in the fourth put the home team on top 9-3.
The Golden Flashes closed the gap to 9-6 in the fifth, but Eastern scored five more in the bottom of the inning to end the game. The Colonels scored two runs on two KSU errors, and freshman Dianne Gallagher had a two-run single.
Gallagher finished 3-for-3 with two runs and two driven in. Gibson went 3-for-4, scored three times and drove in three.
In the first game, Kent State grabbed an early lead with a run in the first inning and then stretched the margin to four with three runs in the fifth. Hair drove in a pair of runners with a single through the left side.
The Colonels got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth. After a single through the right side by
Kalyn Fox, Hussey followed with an RBI double to center field. EKU added another run in the sixth, but couldn’t get any closer.
Kylie Reynolds scattered four hits over seven innings and allowed one earned run while striking out six.
Brittany Mockbee allowed four runs, but only one was earned. She struck out six and did not issue a walk in seven innings of work.
Lauren Brocklehurst went 3-for-4 and scored twice for Kent State. Gallagher finished with two hits for Eastern.
The Colonels’ 11-game home stand ends this weekend when Eastern Illinois visits Gertrude Hood Field for a three-game conference series. Saturday’s doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.
