vs. South Dakota
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Eastern Kentucky split its first two games at the Rebel Games hosted by the city of Kissimmee. The Colonels (4-6) lost to IPFW 2-0 before beating South Dakota by a score of 7-1. Junior
Shyenne Hussey hit her first home run of the season in the win over USD, a three-run shot in the seventh inning.
IPFW (2-1) was out-hit 6-3 by EKU, but the Mastodons held the Colonels scoreless. After a lead-off walk in the top of the fourth, Cassie Wolfe broke a scoreless tie with a two-run home run down the left field line for a 2-0 IPFW lead.
Eastern Kentucky loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh but failed to score. Courtney Cronin struck out the next two batters to end the threat and earn the save for the Mastodons.
Pam Webber and
Kalyn Fox each finished with a pair of hits for EKU. Wolfe finished 1-for-3 for IPFW. Amanda Olender started and earned the win after scattering four hits over five scoreless innings. Freshman
Brittany Mockbee (0-2) allowed two runs on three hits and struck out three batters in three innings of work for Eastern. Sophomore
Stacye Toups pitched four innings of scoreless relief.
Against South Dakota (3-3), Eastern Kentucky jumped out in front in the top of the third. With one out and the bases loaded, a Coyote throwing error allowed a pair of Colonels to score. EKU added another run in the fifth on another USD error.
With a 3-0 lead heading into the final inning, Eastern platted four more to go on top 7-0. With runners on second and third and no outs, Hussey drove a 1-1 pitch over the center field fence to double the Colonel lead. Webber added an RBI single later in the inning.
South Dakota scored one run on an EKU error in the bottom of the seventh but the Coyotes never got any closer.
After closing out the final four innings of the first game of the day, Toups (3-3) started the second game and went the distance. She allowed three hits, one unearned run and two walks while striking out four batters.
Diane Gallagher went 2-for-4 and scored three runs for the Colonels.
Cassi Gibson also recorded two hits and scored twice.
Eastern Kentucky will face Sacred Heart at 3 p.m., and Pennsylvania at 5 p.m., in Kissimmee on Sunday.
