RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University will serve as the host of the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Women’s Golf Championship Thursday through Saturday. The championship will be contested at the Crooked Creek Golf Community in London, Ky. Eight teams will compete for the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.

The field of teams is comprised of Austin Peay, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville State, Morehead State, Murray State, Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech. Crooked Creek is a par-72, 6,020-yard course.

Play will begin each day at 8 a.m. On Thursday, Tennessee State and Morehead State will begin in pairs of two and tee-off in 10 minute intervals from 8 to 8:40 a.m. Eastern Illinois, Tennessee Tech and Austin Peay will tee-off in three-person pairings from 8:50 to 9:30 a.m. Jacksonville State, Murray State and Eastern Kentucky will send groups of three off from 9:40 to 10:20 a.m.

Friday and Saturday’s pairings will be based on the overall team standings after each round.

Jacksonville State has won four straight conference titles. Only three different schools have captured the title since Eastern Kentucky won its only championship in 1996. After the Colonels, Murray State won three in a row, followed by two straight by Tennessee Tech. Murray State three-peated again before JSU began its string of four straight.

Last season the Colonels placed third overall. EKU has finished in the top four in every OVC golf championship since its inception in 1994. Eastern has posted top three finishes nine times in 15 championships.

Brittany Klein is the last Colonel to win the individual medalist honors. She placed first in 2005. EKU’s Beverly Brockman placed first in three of the first four OVC championships.

Sophomore Gabrielle Andersson tied for sixth overall as a freshman at last year’s conference championship. Jacksonville State sophomore Laura Cutler returns to defend her medalist honors from 2008.

The 2009 EKU squad is comprised of Andersson, a sophomore, and six freshmen. Andersson leads the team with a stroke average of 79.3. She has three top-20 finishes and two top-10 performances this season.

Andersson was selected as the Ohio Valley Conference Co-Golfer of the Week on March 25 after tying for 30th among the 124-player field at the First Market Bank Intercollegiate hosted by William and Mary.

Linda Hogberg is second on the team with a stroke average of 80.5 and has finished in the top-20 twice this season. Taylor Church has an 81.7 stroke average and one top-20 finish. Kara Fant has an 82.6 stroke average and also has one top-20 performance to her credit.

As a team, the Colonels have five top-10 finishes this season.
