CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Eastern Kentucky’s tying run was thrown out at the plate in the seventh to end the game, a 4-3 loss to Austin Peay in the series finale on Sunday. The Colonels (14-17, 5-6 OVC) fell behind 4-0 before battling back. The Lady Govs (10-26, 2-9 OVC) prevented EKU from climbing over .500 in conference play.
A sacrifice fly by Tiffany Smith in the bottom of the third gave APSU a 1-0 lead. Austin Peay added three more in the fourth, including RBI doubles by Ashley Alverson and Samantha Butts.
Shyenne Hussey’s sacrifice fly in the fifth got the Colonels on the board and began the comeback. The score remained 4-1 heading into the seventh. With one out,
Cassi Gibson and Hussey came up with back-to-back singles to bring the tying run to the plate. A wild pitch allowed the runners to advance to second and third. A single by
Jena Handley scored one run to cut the deficit to 4-2.
After a fielder’s choice gave EKU two outs, a throwing error kept the comeback alive and allowed Handley to score to make it 4-3.
Ashley Dollins followed with a single, but
Amber Lenz was thrown out at the plate trying to score the tying run from second base.
Gibson finished 3-for-4 with a run scored. Hussey and Dollins each went 2-for-3. Alverson had two hits in three at bats, scored once and drove in one for Austin Peay.
Chelsea Butler (5-2), who earned a win and a save in yesterday’s doubleheader sweep, suffered the loss after allowing two runs on two hits in three innings. Butler only allowed one earned run, but walked two batters.
The Colonels step out of conference play for a single game at Louisville on Tuesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
