OXFORD, Ohio.
– The Eastern Kentucky University women’s soccer team was defeated on the road at Miami University on Sunday afternoon, 3-0. The Redhawks scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the match and the Colonels, despite a valiant defensive stand over the next 80 minutes, were never able to recover.

“We played extremely soft for a 10 minute span,” head coach Lindsay Basalyga said. “In the second half, we were a completely different team. If you’re soft for any amount of time, however, good teams are going to find a way to capitalize, and that’s what happened today.”

In just the second minute of the match, Miami’s Kersta Carlson took a pass from Jodi Zwingelberg and made it 1-0.

Only two minutes later, Stephanie Laser crossed a ball to Julie Thompson, who fired it past EKU keeper Emma Werner to make it 2-0.

Finally, in the ninth minute, Courtney Clarke capped the Redhawk scoring spree when she headed in a goal off a corner kick from Carlson.

Junior midfielder Carly Muller led EKU with three shots. The Colonels, as a team, were outshot on the day, 15-9.

Werner, in just her second career start, made six saves.

“It was a tough opening weekend against two good MAC teams, but I think we’re better because of it,” Basalyga said. “That’s what non-conference weekends are for: learning from mistakes and making improvements for the conference slate.”

The Colonels (0-2-0) will head home to face SIU Edwardsville at EKU Soccer Field on Friday, August 28. The home opener is also Youth Day at EKU Soccer Field.

“This weekend really put us in our place and let us know we have to come ready to play every game,” senior defender Maddy Shumaker said. “I have a feeling it’s going to be a very competitive upcoming week in practice.”
