Those last two meetings came in 1997 and 1998 with each squad winning on their home court. Eastern Kentucky won the first six games in the series and is 5-0 against the RedHawks in Richmond.

In their season opener on Saturday, Eastern Kentucky shot 61 percent in the second half on its way to a 74-61 victory over Chicago State. EKU’s balanced scoring effort was led by sophomore Alex Jones with 19 points. Four other Lady Colonels scored in double figures.

Miami (Ohio) opened its season with an 84-71 loss at home to No. 9 Kentucky on Sunday. The two teams combined for 65 personal fouls and 84 free throw attempts. The Wildcats went to the line 54 times. The RedHawks were led by junior guard Maggie Boyer’s 19 points. Sophomore guard Courtney Osborn finished with 18 points and six rebounds. MU committed 28 turnovers and was out-rebounded 43-38.

Head coach Maria Fantanarosa returned four starters from last season’s team that went 9-22 overall and 6-10 in the Mid-American Conference. Osborn started all 31 games last season and led the team in scoring (16.5 ppg) as a freshman. Boyer averaged 10.6 points per game a year ago.

Last season Miami (Ohio) ranked 18th in the nation in free throw percentage and was among the top-40 teams in blocks and steals. However, the RedHawks ranked in the bottom 30 teams in the country in three-point defense, scoring defense, rebound margin and personal fouls.
