RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team connected on seven three-pointers during a furious second half rally, but the Colonels were edged by Presbyterian College, 67-66, Saturday night at McBrayer Arena. Senior
Spencer Perrin missed the front end of a one-and-one with 3.6 seconds remaining in regulation.
In the waning seconds of a back-and-forth second half, Perrin threw down a backdoor alley-oop dunk to bring EKU to within one, 67-66, with 47 ticks on the clock. After junior
Joshua Jones drew a charging foul at the other end of the floor, Perrin was fouled while bringing the ball up the court with 3.6 seconds left in the game. PC came away with the rebound off the missed Perrin free throw and the Colonels’ late surge fell just short.
The loss drops EKU to 2-3 on the season while Presbyterian College improves to 1-2.
Perrin paced EKU on the night with 16 points and four rebounds. One game after shooting 1-of-7 from the field, senior
Justin Stommes responded by coming off the bench and shooting 5-of-6 (83.3 percent) from the field and 3-of-3 from behind the arc to finish the night with 15 points and a team-high six assists.
After shooting 30 percent (6-of-20) from the field and trailing by five, 28-23, at the end of the first half, EKU found its range in the second half. The Colonels stormed back by shooting a sizzling 63 percent (15-of-24) from the field and 70 percent (7-of-10) from deep in the final 20 minutes.
EKU could not stop PC, though, as the Blue Hose shot 73 percent (16-of-22) from the field in the second half to fend off the Colonels. Jake Troyli recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Blue Hose. Al’Lonzo Coleman contributed with 18 points and eight boards.
The Blue Hose used an early 8-0 run to take a lead they would hold until midway through the first half when freshman
Jeff Johnson swished a three-pointer from the top of the key to make it 18-16 in favor of EKU. PC retook the lead, 22-20, when Khalid Mutakabbir connected on a three-pointer at the 6:44 mark and retained that lead until halftime, heading into the locker room with a 28-23 cushion.
The Colonels used three-point shooting to slowly claw back in the second half. Junior
Jeff Allgood buried a deep three-pointer to tie it, 37-37, with 14:07 on the clock. Jones then gave EKU its first lead of the half when he connected a trifecta from the wing that made it 45-42 with 11:18 left in the game. There would be three lead changes and two ties over the last 11 minutes of basketball.
EKU returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 23, when the Colonels host Cincinnati Christian College at McBrayer Arena at 7 p.m.
