Game Notes

BOCA RATON, Fla. –
Eastern Kentucky will end its trip to south Florida with a game at Florida Atlantic on Monday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

Last year’s game between EKU and FAU in Richmond is believed to be the first collegiate head coaching match-up of two former Lady Colonel basketball players. Eastern head coach Chrissy Roberts played for the Lady Colonels from 1996 to 1998. Florida Atlantic head coach Chancellor Dugan played for EKU from 1978 to 1982.

In the first game of the road trip on Saturday, EKU shot 54 percent in the first half, led by as many as 16 and took an 11-point lead into the locker room at the break, however, the Lady Colonels made only three field goals in the first 19 minutes of the second half and lost 59-52 to Florida International in Miami.

EKU shot 14.8 percent from the field in the second half, making just 4-of-27 attempts. Alex Jones led Eastern with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

Jones’ double-double was her first of the season and the eighth of her career. She is now tied for 13th on the school’s all-time double-double list (records since 1982-83). Through Saturday’s games, Jones leads the OVC in scoring (19 ppg) and is second in rebounding (9.0 rpg).

Eastern Kentucky and Florida Atlantic have met three times in the past. The Lady Colonels won the first two meetings, before the Owls picked up their first win last season. Eastern beat FAU 103-92 the last time the two teams played in Boca Raton (Dec. 8, 2001).

After opening the season with a 103-48 victory over NAIA member Webber International, Florida Atlantic has lost three straight. FAU lost at home to Kennesaw State (65-64) and then dropped two straight road games at Jacksonville (78-66) and at North Florida (63-61).

The Owls are averaging 73.5 points per game this season, but that average drops to 63.6 points without the 55-point victory over Webber International.

Senior guard Teri Stamps leads the team in scoring with an average of 13.3 points per game. She had 12 points, four assists and seven turnovers in FAU’s last game against North Florida. In last year’s meeting with EKU Stamps scored five points. Newcomer Vontrice Dennis is averaging nine points and 10.3 rebounds per game. She had 10 boards in 15 minutes against UNF on Friday.

The Owls have shot 42.2 percent from the field this season and 31.9 percent from three-point range. However, FAU has made only 53.8 percent from the free throw line. Florida Atlantic is averaging 44 rebounds per game this season.

Only two starters return from last season’s team that went 14-15 overall and beat EKU 66-58 in Richmond.
