Marie Carpenter surpassed her career scoring high in the first half and sophomore
Alex Jones scored 19 points as Eastern Kentucky snapped a three-game losing streak by beating Brewton-Parker College 87-60 on Saturday at McBrayer Arena.
Carpenter went 8-for-15 from the field and 8-for-9 at the free throw line to finish with 25 points to go along with a game-high, and career-high, nine rebounds. She had 17 points at halftime, one more than her previous career-best.
Jones added four boards, four assists and two steals to her totals.
Brittany Coles scored 13 points and senior
Cherie White added 10.
Brewton-Parker made only three of its first 16 attempts from the field, but EKU led by only three, 13-10. The Lady Barons trailed by two, 19-17, with 8:40 left in the first half when the Lady Colonels scored 12 unanswered points as part of a 19-4 run to build a double-digit cushion. Carpenter scored seven of the first 12 points during the run. A jumper by
Jasmine Stovall capped the run and put the home team in front by 17, 38-21, with 4:04 remaining before halftime.
A pair of free throws by Coles with 1:10 on the clock extended the lead to 20 points, 46-26, for the first time. After Brewton-Parker closed to within two at the 8:40 mark, the Lady Colonels out-scored the visitors 31-11 to close out the half and take a 50-28 lead into the locker room at the break.
After connecting on only five of its first 18 shots from the field (28 percent), Eastern Kentucky knocked down 12-of-17 (71 percent) over the final 10:30 of the first half.
Eastern scored the first six points of the second half to extend its lead to 28 points. The Lady Colonels would lead by as many as 29 twice before a
Nadia Mossong three-pointer gave the home squad its largest lead of 31 points, 87-56, with 1:43 left in the game.
Andriea Hoskins and Courtney Clark scored 11 points each for the Lady Barons.
EKU shot 50 percent (30-for-60) from the field for the game and out-rebounded BPC 41-36. Eastern held a 40-26 advantage in points in the paint and a 33-18 edge in points off turnovers.
The Lady Colonels will begin Ohio Valley Conference play next week. On Thursday Murray State University will visit McBrayer Arena for a 5:30 p.m. contest. EKU will host Tennessee-Martin on Saturday.

Eastern Kentucky’s 87 points are the most-ever scored by the Lady Colonels under head coach
Chrissy Roberts. The previous best was 83 against Ohio Valley University on Nov. 14, 2008, Roberts’ first game as EKU’s head coach.
Freshman
Marie Carpenter has scored 10 or more points in four of her first five collegiate games. She set a new career-high in the first half against Brewton-Parker, scoring 17 points.

Eastern Kentucky entered the game averaging 60.5 points per game and having not scored more than 59 points in its last three games. The Lady Colonels scored 50 points in the first half against Brewton-Parker.
Eastern’s 87 points against Brewton-Parker is the most by the Lady Colonels since scoring 104 at Jacksonville State on Feb. 14, 2008.
EKU has had a double-digit lead in three of its first five games of the season.

Brewton-Parker is the first EKU opponent this season to shoot better than 32 percent from behind the three-point arc against the Lady Colonels. The Lady Barons finished 4-for-11 from deep for 36 percent.
Saturday’s game between EKU and Brewton-Parker was the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
