EKU and Murray State will be meeting for the 79th time on Thursday. The Lady Colonels hold a 50-28 advantage in the series. The first meeting came during the 1971-72 season. Murray State is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings between the two teams. The Racers beat Eastern 79-64 in Richmond the last time the two schools squared off, on Feb. 27, 2010.
On Monday, a pair of Lady Colonels earned recognition by the OVC.
Marie Carpenter was selected as the OVC Freshman of the Week and
Reese Bass was chosen as the Co-Newcomer of the Week.
Bass is averaging an OVC-best 4.2 assists per game. She also leads the OVC with a 1.8 assist-to-turnover ratio. Sophomore
Alex Jones is tied for second in the OVC in scoring, second in steals, third in rebounding and fifth in field goal percentage.
Brittany Coles leads the conference in blocks. Carpenter is third in free throw percentage.
In Eastern’s last game, Carpenter surpassed her career scoring high in the first half and Jones scored 19 points as Eastern Kentucky snapped a three-game losing streak by beating Brewton-Parker College 87-60 on Saturday at McBrayer Arena. Carpenter went 8-for-15 from the field and 8-for-9 at the free throw line to finish with 25 points to go along with a game-high, and career-high, nine rebounds. She had 17 points at halftime, one more than her previous career-best.
Jones added four boards, four assists and two steals to her totals. Coles scored 13 points and senior Cherie White added 10.
In her last two games, Carpenter is averaging 18 points and seven rebounds.
Murray State is off to a 2-4 start to the season. After opening the season with two straight wins over St. Catherine (78-59) and Mid-Continent (76-54) the Racers have lost four straight. MSU lost at Evansville (60-54) and at Saint Louis (72-55) before dropping two games at a neutral site to Kentucky (91-59) and Louisiana-Lafayette (79-66).
Just like Eastern Kentucky, the Racers have only scored more than 59 points once against Division I competition.
Kayla Lowe, a 6-foot-1 forward/center from Pikeville, Ky., leads Murray State with an average of 11.3 points per game. She is third on the team in rebounding (6.7 rpg). The junior recorded her first career double-double against Evansville earlier this season, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Rachael Isom is second on the team with an average of 10.3 points per game. Redshirt freshman Jessica Winfrey is the team’s top rebounder at 8.0 per game. She also averages 8.3 points per game. Sophomore guard Mariah Robinson is averaging 9.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.
The Racers have shot 34 percent from the field, 24 percent from three-point range and 65 percent from the free throw line this season.
