SPARTANBURG, S.C. –
Eastern Kentucky lost both games on Saturday at the Campus Suites Spartan Classic hosted by the University of South Carolina Upstate. EKU fell 5-3 to Maryland-Baltimore County and 9-1 in six innings to the host Spartans.

UMBC scored five times in the first two innings to take an early lead. Amanda Fefel hit a three-run home run in the top of the second.

A sacrifice fly by freshman Raquel Howes in the bottom of the third got the Colonels on the board. EKU cut the deficit to two in the fifth on an RBI ground out by Larkyn Wood and a run scoring single to center by Ashely Dollins. The Colonels wouldn’t get any closer.

Junior Stacye Toups came on to pitch in the second and held the Retrievers scoreless over the final five and two-thirds innings. She allowed five hits and struck out two. Sophomore Diane Gallagher went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Freshman Cheyanne Pounds had two hits in three at bats in her collegiate debut.

Fefel finished 2-for-3 with a run and four RBIs for UMBC. She also pitched two and a third innings of hitless relief.

Against USC Upstate, Eastern Kentucky trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Spartans exploded for seven runs to end the game.

Dollins staked the Colonels to a 1-0 lead when she homered in the second. It was the first career round-tripper for the junior. The Spartans took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Lauren Quevedo scored on a wild pitch. Three EKU errors in the sixth led to seven runs for USC Upstate. The game ended when Ericka Harris singled to center to drive in Ashley McCurry.

Spartan starter Morgan Childers allowed two hits and struck out 15 in six innings.

The Colonels will play Liberty in the consolation game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
