RICHMOND, Ky. – After nine days off to focus on final exams, the Eastern Kentucky University women’s basketball team finally returns to action on Tuesday when the Lady Colonels host West Virginia State at McBrayer Arena at 7:00 p.m.
EKU (5-5) has suffered two consecutive road losses at Ohio and Cincinnati, but is undefeated at home this season. The Lady Colonels hold a +14.0 scoring margin, +5.0 rebounding margin and +2.2 turnover margin over their opponents at McBrayer Arena.
Senior
Jade Barber continues to lead Eastern, as she ranks first in the Ohio Valley Conference in field goal percentage (.632) and second in rebounding (9.7 rebounds per game). Fellow seniors
Alex Jones (7.6 points per game, 7.5 rebounds per game),
Brittany Coles (9.5 points per game) and
Raechele Gray (9.2 points per game) have also performed well for the Lady Colonels in the early going, while freshmen such as
Alexus Cooper (4.0 points per game) and
Miranda Maples (2.9 points per game, 3.3 rebounds per game) are beginning to settle into roles.
WVSU (3-3) won its first three games of the season but has since dropped three straight. The Yellow Jackets are led by Jasmine Blanton, who comes into Tuesday’s affair averaging 18.3 points per game. Asis Greenleaf (14.0 points per game, 8.0 rebounds per game) has also been a force in the paint for WVSU.
EKU is 1-0 all-time against WVSU, as the Lady Colonels won the only other previous matchup between the two programs, 76-66, on Dec. 7, 2010. Jones had 31 points and 11 rebounds as a sophomore in that game.
Tuesday’s game is EKU’s final tune-up before conference season begins. The Lady Colonels’ next game will be at OVC foe Murray State on New Year’s Eve at 2:00 p.m.
