Nijhuis Qualifies for NCAA Championships in 10,000 Meters

GREENSBORO, N.C.
– Eastern Kentucky University sophomore Thijs Nijhuis qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday night, finishing 11th in the men’s 10,000 meters at the NCAA East Region Preliminary Round with a time of 30:01.70.

The top-12 finishers from each event at the East and West regionals advance to the NCAA National Championships, which will be held June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.

UNCG’s Paul Katam won the 10,000 meters, edging Florida State’s Michael Fout with a time of 29:50.22.

Nijhuis, who was an All-Southeast Region performer during the cross country season, qualified for the East regional with a time of 29:42.01, which he ran at the Penn Relays on April 26.

Senior Bianca Forbes, meanwhile, also competed at the East regional on Thursday night, finishing 48th in the women’s 400 meters with a time of 1:01.96.

Three other Colonels are also set to compete in Greensboro this weekend. Sophomore Ole Hesselbjerg will run in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday night, while junior Wade Meddles and sophomore Ann Eason will compete in the men’s and women’s 5,000 meters on Saturday.

EKU qualified three runners for the NCAA Championships last spring.
