EUGENE, Ore. – Five Eastern Kentucky University track and field student-athletes will compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championships this week at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
The national championship meet runs from Wednesday, June 10 to Saturday, June 13 and will air on ESPN and ESPN2.
EKU's five NCAA qualifiers are
Miguel Baidal (men's 10,000 meters),
Edna Chelulei (women's 5,000 meters),
Taha Er Raouy (men's 5,000 meters),
Kristian Imroth (men's 3,000-meter steeplechase), and
Brighter Jepchumba (women's 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters).
Imroth will kick off the action for the Colonels, competing in the semifinals of the steeplechase on Wednesday at 8:38 p.m. ET. That race will air on ESPN. This is Imroth's third consecutive trip to Eugene for the NCAA Championships. He ran a 10-second personal-best of 8:20.50 at the NCAA East First Rounds in Lexington two weeks ago.
EKU has had a qualifier in the men's steeplechase at 13 of the last 14 NCAA Championships.
The top five finishers from both steeplechase semifinal heats, plus the next two fastest times, will advance to the final, which will take place on Friday at 8:24 p.m. ET. The final will air on ESPN2.
Baidal will race in the final of the men's 10,000 meters on Wednesday night at 10:56 p.m. ET. The race will air on ESPN and ESPN2. Baidal qualified by finishing eighth in the 10K at the NCAA East First Rounds with a time of 28:52.95. He is the second Colonel in the last three years to advance to Eugene in the men's 10,000 meters, joining
Nikodem Dworczak in 2024.
Jepchumba will race in the women's 10,000 meters final on Thursday night at 10:56 p.m. ET. That race will air on ESPN2. The freshman qualified by placing eighth at the NCAA East First Rounds with a time of 33:06.47.
Er Raouy will compete in the final of the men's 5,000 meters on Friday at 9:55 p.m. ET. That race will air on ESPN2. The junior from Marrakesh, Morocco ran a big personal-best of 13:30.21 at the NCAA East First Rounds to reach the NCAA Championships. He competed in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas in February.
Chelulei and Jepchumba will close out the meet by racing the final of the women's 5,000 meters on Friday at 9:55 p.m. ET. That race will air on ESPN2. Chelulei finished third at the NCAA East First Rounds to qualify (15:29.37), while Jepchumba took ninth at the regional meet (15:42.38).
This will be Chelulei's second consecutive trip to Eugene. She competed in both the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters last year.
Chelulei finished sixth in the 5,000 meters at this year's NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, earning first team All-America honors.
