NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Eastern Kentucky University men's tennis team wrapped up its 2014 fall schedule this weekend at the ITA Regional Championships hosted by Vanderbilt University.
The team of senior
Juanjo de la Llera and junior
Alex Alvaro made a deep run in the doubles draw as the tandem advanced from the round of 64 all the way to the quarterfinals. The streak began with a tie-breaker victory over Ball State's Lucas Anderson and Jan Jirius. In the second round, the Colonel duo knocked off the tournament's No. 3 seed from Purdue, Ricky Medinilla and Diego Acosta, 8-5. The Purdue team entered the tournament ranked No. 41 nationally.
Alvaro and de la Llera then won their third straight match to advance to the quarters, this time over Xavier's Gabriel Chaves Araujo and Zach Mueck, by a score of 8-5. Alvaro and de la Llera's impressive run came to an end at the hands of Tennessee Tech's Oleksiy Arovin and Alberto Esteban, 8-6.
"This was the first time ever that we've had a doubles team make this deep of a run at regionals," EKU head coach
Rob Oertel said. "Doubles has been a team weakness the last couple of years, so it was nice to see our doubles play move up a notch. We are going to need that time of play in the spring."
Eastern's other doubles entry comprising sophomores
Sebastian Mueller and
Diego Asis also had a solid showing. The duo picked up two wins before falling to the tournament's No. 8 seed from Middle Tennessee State, Ben Davis and Ettore Zito.
In singles, Mueller was the only Colonel to notch a first-round win in the main draw. He defeated Tennessee's Bartosz Sawicki, 6-4, 6-2. Alvaro and junior
Florian Graskamp each rallied with a victory in the consolation bracket.
Eastern Kentucky will begin its indoor season in late January.
