#5 South Carolina Breaks Tie Late, Beats Eastern Kentucky

COLUMBIA, S.C. –
Eastern Kentucky battled fifth ranked South Carolina to a scoreless tie through five innings, but the Gamecocks scored twice in the sixth to pull out a 2-0 win on Saturday in game two of the series.

South Carolina (6-0) has not allowed a run in 42 consecutive innings.

The game remained scoreless until the sixth inning. EKU (1-5) got a runner into scoring position in the top of the inning, but came up empty. The Gamecocks took the lead in the bottom half of the sixth. With one out, Connor Bright doubled to left. Grayson Greiner followed with a two-run home run that just barely cleared the left field wall.

Tanner Perkins (0-1) turned in his second quality start of the season. The senior transfer from Western Kentucky scattered seven hits over six innings. He allowed two runs, walked two and struck out one.

Logan Hershenow kept the Gamecocks at bay over the final two innings. He allowed two hits and struck out a pair. Eastern Kentucky relievers had retired 15 straight batters – 11 straight in this series – before a one-out South Carolina single in the eighth.

Jack Wynkoop (2-0) earned the win after tossing seven and one-third shutout innings. He allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out 10. Joel Seddon earned the save after tossing a perfect ninth inning.

Three players – Luke Wurzelbacher, Justin Cessna and TJ Alas – recorded one hit each for the Colonels. Brison Celek went 2-for-2 for South Carolina. Greiner finished 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.

The Colonels and Gamecocks will conclude their series on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
