CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. –The Eastern Kentucky men's tennis team posted an impressive 7-7 record in singles play, along with a 5-3 record in doubles at the 2015 Steve Baras Fall Classic over the weekend.
The Colonels advanced to three championship matches, but the matches were canceled due to rain.
Alex Alvaro advanced to the championship of Flight A singles after picking up wins over Luis Morillo Diaz of Middle Tennessee State and Alvaro Cintas of Tennessee Tech to finish 2-0. Alvaro was set to face Arnav Mohanty of Mercer University for the championship but it was canceled due to rain.
Colin Hart's two wins in Flight F singles put him in the championship match against MTSU's Jacob Pugh, but that event was also canceled. Hart defeated Paul LaHue (4-6, 6-4, (7-5)) from University of Tennessee Chattanooga and Luke Bynum of Covenant (6-4, 6-0).
"Alex was the Colonel of the weekend going 4-0 on the weekend," Head Coach
Rob Oertel said. "He picked up two solid wins in singles play."
In doubles play, Avaro and
Ramon van Flymen were set to take on Arnav Mohanty and Arsav Monhanty of Mercer in the Flight A doubles championship but rain again shortened the draw. The EKU duo topped Alvaro Cintas and Jorge Alfonzo of Tennessee Tech, 6-3, before picking up a 6-4 win over Miguel Negre Fernandez and Luis Morillo Diaz of MTSU.
Sebastian Mueller and
Diego Asis also moved to the championship match but were unable to finish. The duo won Friday's match over Anderson Scarpa and Ruben Vanoppen of Merer University, 6-4, along with a 6-2 win over Lucas de Torres Curth and Corey Smith of Kennesaw State University.
"It was another exceptional weekend for our men's doubles which has been our biggest positive of the fall," Oertel added.
The event was hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga marking the 33rd year of the event.
Eastern Kentucky will be back action Oct. 15 as its travels to West Lafayette, Indiana for the ITA Region 8 Championships.
