Álvaro, van Flymen Upend Nation's 15th Ranked Duo

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The EKU men's tennis team continued its taxing spring schedule with the best doubles win in the history of the program, as Alex Álvaro and Ramon van Flymen upended Virginia's 15th ranked duo of Ryan Shane and Luca Corinteli.

Despite a solid team effort, the Colonels fell to the top-ranked University of Virginia, 7-0, on Sunday.

Álvaro and van Flymen held a 5-3 lead and looked to close but the Cavaliers would not go away. Shane and Corinteli fought past three match points to narrow the lead to 5-4. However, the play from Álvaro and van Flymen was too much.

"It was a great win for Alex and Ramon," Head Coach Rob Oertel said. "They have clearly raised their level of play with the biggest doubles win in EKU history. Ramon is hitting his best returns of his career right now and Alex is playing tremendously at the net."

The Cavaliers (2-0) picked up wins to claim the doubles point, as Sebastian Mueller and Diego Asis pushed the 18th ranked duo of Henrik Wiersholm and J.C. Aragone before falling, 6-4. Virginia solidified the doubles decision with a win at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, the Colonels faced off against two of the nation's top-75 players. The Cavaliers swept singles action to claim the match.

Virginia has won five of the last eight International Tennis Association indoor titles.

EKU will host its home opener on Saturday with dual matches against the University of Indianapolis and Lincoln Memorial University. Saturday's first match is scheduled for 10 a.m. with the second match slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Greg Adams Tennis Center.
