LEXINGTON, Va. – A pair of early goals from freshman
Erin Torrence and senior
Cassie Smith sparked the Eastern Kentucky University soccer team to a 2-0 road win against Virginia Military Institute on Saturday afternoon at Patchin Field.
It is the Colonels' second consecutive shutout, following a 2-0 victory over Northern Kentucky on Thursday in Richmond.
"Today was a good team performance," first-year head coach
Nick Flohre said. "We had a great start to the game and were able to keep control the rest of the first half. We battled pretty well in the second half but have to keep learning how to manage the game better."
Both of Eastern's goals came in the first four minutes of regulation. Torrence struck first, delivering the decisive score just beyond the two-minute mark. The freshman – who scored her first career goal in the 68
th minute against NKU – rebounded a deflection and buried a shot from 15 yards out in the left corner of the goal.
The veteran Smith added an insurance goal just over a minute later, as she beat the VMI goalkeeper to a cross from junior
Logan Harvey and scored in the right corner of the net. It was Smith's 15
th career goal. She is now only two goals shy of the EKU career record. It was Harvey's fifth career assist.
With the benefit of an early two-goal lead, EKU was able to clamp down the rest of the way and secure its second clean sheet in the last three days.
The Colonels outshot the Keydets, 16-11, on the day. Sophomore
Tara Claus came off the bench to lead EKU with three shots.
Sophomores
Kacy Eckley and
Haley Kemper and freshman
Larissa Heslop defied the day's heat and went the distance on an EKU backline that has now not allowed a goal in 201 minutes of play.
Junior
Anna Hall made three saves in goal to earn the shutout.
"Overall, we have to be happy with two shutout wins this week and with the contributions we got from our players who started and who came off the bench," Flohre added.
Eastern stays on the road next week to face The Citadel and Charleston Southern in Charleston, South Carolina.
