RICHMOND, Ky. – Senior
Diego Asis won his fifth consecutive singles match, as the EKU men's tennis team upended Samford University, 5-2, Friday at the Greg Adams Tennis Center.
As the Colonels were looking to clinch the win, EKU head coach
Rob Oertel recalled Asis' presence on the court.
"It was a big team win today for our guys," Oertel said. "Sebastian (Mueller) and Diego's experience was beneficial in a tight match. Special kudos to Diego. His confidence on the court was a big factor in us keeping our composure and clinching the win."
The Colonels quickly wrapped up doubles play, sweeping the three matches to take a 1-0 lead.
Mueller won his second straight singles match with a 6-3, 6-3 victory to give the Colonels early momentum.
After the Bulldogs trimmed the lead to 2-1, newcomer
Jan Kuehling added a critical 7-5, 6-4 win at the No. 4 spot to widen the Colonels' lead back to two.
Samford, however, picked up a win at the No. 5 spot, before a lengthy win from junior
Ramon van Flymen at the No. 1 spot which solidified the EKU win. Van Flymen and Samford's Justin Ghavami saw back-to-back tiebreakers before van Flymen rallied for the 6-3 win in the third set.
Asis added a 6-3, 6-3 win as the Colonels notched their third straight victory and fourth win in their last five matches.
The win ended a five match losing streak to Samford.
